1. (n.) Slang. Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In hospital circles, this term is used to refer to a patient with HIV so as not to cause concern if overheard.
Origins: From the homophonic portion of the HIV acronym, HI, pronounced like the word high; and from the resemblance of V to its roman numeral equivalent, five. The two combined create the light-hearted sounding term, high-five, to slap the upraised plam against another in celebration or greeting.
